Digital Marketing Trends in 2020
Digital Marketing Trends in 2020
Greg Walthour, CO-CEO • Intero Digital • July 27, 2018
Over the years we have seen a shift in digital marketing. What worked in 2019 won’t be as effective moving into 2020. Today, more and more businesses are turning to social media to increase their brand’s reach and with information available on-demand, customers are demanding transparency. Knowing the digital marketing trends in 2020 and how they have changed over the years is the first step in creating a digital marketing strategy.
The Future is Video
Digital Marketing Trends in 2020 all point to content. Buyers consume content as fast as you can create it. And while it might have been about the digital image in years past, today, it’s all about video content. There’s no denying this when you look at the enormous success of YouTube. The video-sharing platform is the world’s second-largest social media site and the second most visited site behind, coming in only behind Google. On top of that, nearly 70% of users agree that they would rather watch a video to learn about a new product than read about it in written form. So now more than ever the future of digital marketing in 2020 is video.
Being #1 is No Longer Good Enough
In the past, digital marketing trends have all been about scoring that number one spot on the search engine results page. Moving into 2020, number one spot is not good enough. It’s all about position zero. What exactly is position zero? Position zero is that little snippet that pops up at the top of the SERP that usually answers the searcher’s query. How important is position zero and how do you get there? One analysis found that the click-through rate for one page went from 2% to 8% after they landed at position zero. That same page saw a 505% increase in mobile traffic.
As for how you claim that spot, it all comes down to how well you answer a searcher’s question. Google is good at pulling data from web pages, but if your page can directly answer the question in an easy to digest format, you’re more likely to land that spot. Also important to note – you can only make it to position zero if your page organically ranks on the first page of the SERP. Just like with video, being number 1 in SERP has always been important but the future of digital marketing in 2020 lies in that position zero spot!
The Demand for Interactive Content Will Continue to Grow
Another digital marketing trend in 2020 is the demand for interactive content. People love to interact with their content and share it with their friends. You’ve likely seen those highly addictive quizzes and personality profiles floating all over Facebook. But beyond the frighteningly accurate quizzes, consumers are turning to social media to shop. Consumers are not just discovering new products on social media; they’re turning to it as one of their first stops.
Last year, Pinterest released revealing data about their users’ shopping habits. The results showed that 60% of shoppers get ideas for what to buy on Pinterest as opposed to 48% using a search engine to find results. Another statistic to note – 72% of people surveyed said that Pinterest inspires them to shop when they aren’t even looking to buy anything. Knowing how to harness your customer’s desire for interactive content can mean a dramatic change in your brand’s success this coming year.
Optimized Landing Pages are More Important Than Ever
Even though it seems obvious, perfectly optimized landing pages are one of the biggest digital marketing trends for 2020. Landing pages are one of the best opportunities to convert someone who’s on the fence into a customer. From a marketing standpoint, you have to understand how to create a page that will convince customers to invest in your business. At the same time, having an effective call to action will do you no good if your page never even shows up on the search results page.
When you create a landing page, the goal is to provide value to your customer. Begin by answering why – why does someone browsing need your product? If you can answer this question without weighing your customer down with unnecessary information, you’re more likely to convert.
